Pipe Bursting in Girard

Girard climbs the hills on the north bank of the Mahoning River, with mill-era houses from the 1890s to the 1930s downtown and postwar ranches on the ridges above. Its laterals are clay running downhill to the mains, and the camera usually finds pulled joints on the slopes, roots at every bell, and a cast-iron drain that has rusted thin.

Hillside housing above the river

Girard was a mill town, and its oldest streets run up from the Mahoning River and the old steel works along Route 422. The houses downtown and on the first rise of hills, around Liberty Street, Churchill Road, and the blocks near the high school, date from the 1890s through the 1930s. The ranches and split-levels on the ridges toward Liberty Township were built through the 1950s and 1960s. Nearly every lateral is vitrified clay in short jointed lengths, running downhill from a cast-iron house drain to a main in the street. Some postwar blocks have Orangeburg. PVC is limited to replacements and a few newer streets.

The slope defines the plumbing here. A lateral that drops ten or fifteen feet between the house and the main carries flow fast, which keeps it cleaner than a flat line but puts the joints under tension as the ground moves.

Creep, frost, and roots on the slopes

The soil on Girard's hills is glacial till over shale, heavy with clay, and it creeps downhill a little every year. A jointed clay pipe laid down that slope stretches at the joints over decades, and the camera finds gaps where the bells have pulled apart rather than offsets. On the flatter ground near the river, the usual swelling and shrinking of wet clay does the damage, and frost to roughly three feet heaves the run closest to the house each winter.

Sycamores and silver maples line the older streets, and their roots follow the moisture from an open joint straight into the pipe. On a hillside lateral the first joints below the house are often the worst, because frost and creep both act there. Girard's older sewers carry some storm water, and in a heavy rain the mains in the low part of town near the river can surcharge into basements with floor drains and no backwater valve. The hillside homes rarely see that; their problem is the blocked or broken lateral itself.

Lining a sloped lateral, or bursting it

Cured-in-place lining handles most Girard laterals. The installer hydro jets the line, cuts the roots, and inverts an epoxy-saturated felt liner from the basement cleanout, curing it with hot water, steam, or UV. The liner bridges the small gaps at pulled joints, seals every bell, and keeps the roots out, and it does all of that without a pit on the hillside. For one pulled joint in an otherwise sound run, a sectional point repair cured over that joint is quicker and cheaper than lining the full length.

Pipe bursting is needed when a joint has separated so far that soil is visible, when a section has collapsed, or when an offset stops the camera. A bursting head is pulled from a pit near the main to a pit at the house, breaking the old clay while fused HDPE follows. On a slope the pits need shoring and a plan for groundwater and runoff, and the installer should walk the route with you before quoting.

Girard permits and the right-of-way

Girard issues the permit for lateral work and inspects it, reviewing the pre- and post-cure video for a liner or the open connection before backfill for a bursting job. Any work in the tree lawn, sidewalk, or street needs a right-of-way permit through the city. The city's sewer-use rules apply to connections, including the prohibition on downspouts, sump pumps, and footer drains in the sanitary lateral where sewers are separated. Homes just over the line in Liberty Township on county sewers fall under the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer instead.

In most communities the owner's responsibility runs to the main. Ask the installer to confirm the connection point for your street and to include the permit and inspection in the quote.

What the day brings and how to compare installers

A lining crew sets up at the basement cleanout, jets and films the line, wets out the liner, inverts it, and cures it over a few hours. Branch lines are reinstated with a robotic cutter and the finished pipe is filmed. Drains are back by late afternoon. A bursting crew brings an excavator, shoring, and a pulling rig, and returns the next day to backfill, compact, and restore the slope.

Ask each bidder to point out the pulled joints on the footage and explain why their method fits. The scope should list footage, liner thickness or HDPE size, pit locations if any, and the warranty. To compare installers whose training and insurance have been verified, find a verified CIPP contractor and ask for a reference from a hillside job in Girard or nearby. A crew that has shored a pit on one of these slopes will have a plan for yours.

Pipe Bursting in Girard

How pipe bursting works

A steel cable is threaded through the old sewer line from a pit at one end to a pit at the other. A cone-shaped bursting head, with new high-density polyethylene pipe fused to it, is pulled through by a hydraulic unit. The head splits the old clay or cast iron outward into the soil and the new pipe follows in the same alignment at the same depth. The result is a single fused length of pipe with no joints for roots to find.

When bursting is the right call

  • Collapsed sections — a liner needs a host pipe to hold its shape; a collapsed run has none.
  • Bellies — a low spot that holds water stays a low spot after lining. Bursting lays new pipe on a fresh bed.
  • Undersized lines — bursting can upsize a 3-inch lateral to 4 inches; lining slightly reduces diameter.
  • Badly deformed pipe — Orangeburg that has flattened, or cast iron with most of its bottom gone.

What the job looks like

One pit at the house or cleanout, one at the property line or the street connection, each a few feet square. Utilities that cross within a foot or two of the sewer path are located and potholed first. The pull takes an hour or two; the whole job, including fusing, connections, inspection and backfill, is usually one day.

Permits and the street

If the downstream pit is in the sidewalk, parkway or street, a right-of-way permit and restoration to city standards are required in addition to the plumbing permit. If the connection at the main is replaced, the city inspects it before the pit closes. Confirm who is handling this before work starts.

Questions we hear in Girard

Who owns the lateral at a Girard house?+

Girard follows the common Ohio rule: the property owner maintains the lateral from the house to the connection at the main, including the section under the sidewalk and street. The city maintains the mains. Confirm the connection point with the city before any contractor quotes the job.

Why do Girard laterals pull apart on the hills?+

Clay soil on a slope creeps slowly downhill, and a jointed clay lateral running down that slope stretches at the joints over decades. The camera shows gaps rather than offsets. Frost to about three feet adds a heave each winter, and sycamores and silver maples root into the gaps.

Is lining possible on a steep lateral?+

Yes, as long as the pipe is round and the camera can pass. The liner is inverted or pulled in from the house and cures in place regardless of slope. A joint that has pulled fully apart with soil showing, or a collapsed section, needs pipe bursting or a spot excavation.

How disruptive is bursting on a hillside lot?+

Bursting needs a pit at the house and one near the main, and on a slope the pits need shoring and a plan for runoff. Lining avoids both. If bursting is required, ask the installer to mark the pit locations and explain how the hillside will be restored.

How long does the job take and what will it cost?+

A Girard lining job is usually one day; bursting is one to two days including restoration. Price depends on length, depth, slope, the number of branches, and whether the street is opened. Compare bids on the same camera footage and written scope. Estimates are free; call now.
