Pipe Bursting in Champion
Champion Township is the suburban band northwest of Warren along Mahoning Avenue, with 1950s ranches near the city line and newer plats toward Route 45 and the lake. Its laterals are clay in the older streets and PVC in later ones; the camera usually finds roots in the clay, a belly in the PVC, and groundwater in the low plats.

Warren's northwest suburbs
Champion Township developed as Warren spread northwest along Mahoning Avenue toward Mosquito Lake. The ranches and Cape Cods near the city line and off Mahoning Avenue date from the late 1940s and 1950s, the colonials and split-levels in the plats off Route 45 and Champion Avenue from the 1960s and 1970s, and the larger homes and cul-de-sacs toward the lake and the township's north end from the 1980s onward. The 1950s streets have vitrified clay laterals in short jointed lengths, with Orangeburg possible in the earliest builds. The plats from the mid-1970s on have PVC. Cast iron runs through the foundation in the older homes.
Farmhouses and large-lot homes along the older roads were often on septic until county sewers arrived, and the tie-in to the main may hold mixed materials that the camera will reveal.
Wet till near the creek and the lake
Champion sits on glacial till with heavy clay, flat and slow to drain, with the water table rising close to the surface in spring in the plats near Mosquito Creek and toward the lake. A clay lateral with open joints becomes a drain for the yard, pulling in groundwater and silt that settles in low spots. Frost to roughly three feet heaves the shallow run near the house every winter and opens the first joints. In the PVC plats, trenches backfilled with wet till settle, and the pipe sags into bellies.
The silver maples, pin oaks, and sycamores along the postwar streets are mature, and willows in the low ground near the creek are aggressive root growers. The clay laterals usually show roots at most joints; the PVC laterals at one separated joint or a transition coupling. Champion's sanitary sewers are separate from storm drainage, so a basement backup is usually the lateral itself, though a plat full of leaking laterals can push the county main past its capacity in a wet spring.
Choosing the trenchless method
For the clay laterals in the 1950s streets, cured-in-place lining is the standard fix. After a camera inspection and hydro jetting, an epoxy-saturated felt liner is inverted from the basement cleanout and cured with hot water, steam, or UV. The joints are sealed, the groundwater stops, and the roots are locked out. For a PVC lateral with one separated joint, a sectional point repair cured over that spot is quicker and cheaper than lining the full run.
Pipe bursting is the method when a belly holds standing water, when a clay section has collapsed, or when an offset stops the camera. The bursting head is pulled from a pit near the main to a pit at the house while fused HDPE follows, and it can upsize the lateral for a home with added fixtures. In the low plats the pits fill with groundwater quickly, so the crew should plan for a pump and, if possible, a dry stretch of weather.
County permits and the township road
Because Champion is a township, the sanitary sewers are operated by the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer, which issues the permit for lateral work and sends its own inspector. For a liner, the inspector reviews the post-cure video; for bursting, the inspector sees the new connection before the pits are backfilled. The county prohibits tying downspouts, sump pumps, and footer drains into the sanitary lateral. Opening a township road needs a permit from the township, and work in Mahoning Avenue or Route 45 goes through the agency that maintains the road.
In most communities the owner's responsibility runs to the main. Ask the installer to confirm the connection point for your plat and to include the permit and inspection in the quote.
The day of the job and how to choose a crew
A point repair is a few hours with drains off. A full liner takes a day: jetting, filming, wet-out, cure, reinstatement of branch lines, and a final video. A bursting crew brings an excavator for the pits, a pulling rig, and a dewatering pump, with a second day to restore the lawn and tree lawn.
Each bid should state the method, the measured footage, the liner thickness or HDPE size, and the plan for groundwater in the pits. To compare installers whose training and insurance have been verified, find a verified CIPP contractor and ask for a reference from a Champion or Warren job in similar wet ground. A contractor who works with the county sanitary engineer's inspectors regularly will know what they want to see before the pits are closed.
Pipe Bursting in Champion
How pipe bursting works
A steel cable is threaded through the old sewer line from a pit at one end to a pit at the other. A cone-shaped bursting head, with new high-density polyethylene pipe fused to it, is pulled through by a hydraulic unit. The head splits the old clay or cast iron outward into the soil and the new pipe follows in the same alignment at the same depth. The result is a single fused length of pipe with no joints for roots to find.
When bursting is the right call
- Collapsed sections — a liner needs a host pipe to hold its shape; a collapsed run has none.
- Bellies — a low spot that holds water stays a low spot after lining. Bursting lays new pipe on a fresh bed.
- Undersized lines — bursting can upsize a 3-inch lateral to 4 inches; lining slightly reduces diameter.
- Badly deformed pipe — Orangeburg that has flattened, or cast iron with most of its bottom gone.
What the job looks like
One pit at the house or cleanout, one at the property line or the street connection, each a few feet square. Utilities that cross within a foot or two of the sewer path are located and potholed first. The pull takes an hour or two; the whole job, including fusing, connections, inspection and backfill, is usually one day.
Permits and the street
If the downstream pit is in the sidewalk, parkway or street, a right-of-way permit and restoration to city standards are required in addition to the plumbing permit. If the connection at the main is replaced, the city inspects it before the pit closes. Confirm who is handling this before work starts.

Questions we hear in Champion
Who takes care of the lateral in Champion Township?+
In Champion, the property owner maintains the lateral from the house to the connection at the main, in line with most Ohio communities. The sanitary mains in the township are operated by the Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer, which issues the permit and inspects the work. Confirm the connection point with that office.
Why is there so much water in my sewer line?+
The ground in Champion is wet glacial till, and the plats near Mosquito Creek and the smaller drainage ways have a water table close to the surface in spring. A clay lateral with open joints takes in groundwater and silt. A liner seals the joints and stops the infiltration.
Lining, point repair, or bursting?+
A clay lateral with roots at most joints is lined full length. One separated PVC joint is a sectional point repair. A belly that holds standing water or a collapsed section needs pipe bursting, because a liner follows the shape of the pipe it is installed in.
How much of the property is disturbed?+
Lining and point repairs work from a cleanout and leave the lawn and driveway alone. Bursting needs a pit at the foundation and one near the main, usually the front lawn and the tree lawn. In a wet plat the pits need a pump, and the crew restores the surface the next day.
How long does the repair take and what does it cost?+
Point repairs are a few hours, lining a day, and bursting one to two days with restoration. Price depends on footage, depth, groundwater, the number of branches, and whether the road is opened. Get a camera inspection and compare written scopes. Estimates are free; call now.
